(az may' beth) Personal and place name meaning, “strong as death” or “death is strong.” 1. Member of David's elite 30 military heroes (2 Samuel 23:31). He lived in Barhum or perhaps Baharum (NRSV). See Baharum. 2. Descendant of Saul in tribe of Benjamin (1 Chronicles 8:36). 3. Father of two of David's military leaders (1 Chronicles 12:3), probably identical with 1. above. 4. The treasurer of David's kingdom (1 Chronicles 27:25). He, too, may be identical with 1. above. 5. A city probably the same as Beth-azmaveth. See Beth-azmaveth. Forty-two men of the city returned to Jerusalem from Exile in Babylon with Zerubbabel in 537 B.C. (Ezra 2:24). Levites on the Temple staff as singers lived there. It apparently is near Jerusalem, perhaps modern Hizmeh, five miles northeast of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 12:29).
