A bird similar to a swallow but unrelated to swallows. Jeremiah mentions the swift (Luke 8:7 NAS, NIV). Other versions translate “swallow” (KJV, NRSV). Some commentators think a bulbul or wryneck is meant. Perhaps bulbul (Pycnonotus Reichenovi) is the best linguistic guess. See Birds.
