The Council at Jerusalem

1 Some R859 men came down from Judea and began teaching the R860 brethren, "Unless you are circumcised R861 according to the R862 custom of Moses, you cannot be saved." 2 And when Paul and Barnabas had great F353 dissension and debate R863 with them, the R864 brethren determined that Paul and Barnabas and some others of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles R865 and elders concerning this issue. 3 Therefore, being sent R866 on their way by the church, they were passing through both Phoenicia R867 and Samaria, describing R868 in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and were bringing great joy to all the R869 brethren. 4 When they arrived at Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the R870 apostles and the elders, and they reported R871 all that God had done with them. 5 But some of the R872 sect of the Pharisees R873 who had believed stood up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise R874 them and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses."

6 The R875 apostles and the elders came together to look F354 into this matter. F355 7 After there had been much debate, R876 Peter stood up and said to them, "Brethren, you know that in F356 the early days God R877 made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the R878 gospel and believe. 8 "And God, who R879 knows the heart, testified to them giving R880 them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; 9 and He R881 made no distinction between us and them, cleansing R882 their hearts by faith. 10 "Now therefore why do you put R883 God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a yoke which neither R884 our fathers nor we have been able to bear? 11 "But we believe that we are saved through the R885 grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as they also are."

12 All the people kept silent, and they were listening to Barnabas and Paul as they were relating R886 what signs R887 and wonders God had done through them among the Gentiles.

James's Judgment

13 After they had stopped speaking, James R888 F357 answered, saying, "Brethren, listen to me. 14 "Simeon R889 has related how God first concerned Himself about taking from among the Gentiles a people for His name. 15 "With this the words of the R890 Prophets agree, just as it is written,

16 `AFTER R891 THESE THINGS I R892 will return,

19 "Therefore it is my R897 judgment that we do not trouble those who are turning to God from among the Gentiles, 20 but that we write to them that they abstain from things R898 F362 contaminated by idols and from fornication R899 and from what R900 is strangled and from blood. 21 "For Moses R901 from ancient generations has in every city those who preach him, since he F363 is read in the synagogues every Sabbath."

22 Then it seemed good to the R902 apostles and the elders, with the whole church, to choose men from among them to send to Antioch R903 with Paul and Barnabas--Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, R904 leading men among the R905 brethren, 23 and they sent F364 this letter by them,

"The R906 apostles and the brethren who are elders, to the R907 brethren in Antioch R908 and Syria R909 and Cilicia R910 who are from the Gentiles, greetings. R911 24"Since we have heard that some R912 of F365 our number to whom we gave no instruction have disturbed R913 you with their words, unsettling your souls, 25it R914 seemed good to us, having become F366 of one mind, to select men to send to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26men who have risked R915 F367 their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27"Therefore we have sent Judas R916 and Silas, R917 who themselves will also report the same things by word of mouth. 28"For it R918 seemed good to the R919 Holy Spirit and to us R920 to lay upon you no greater burden than these essentials: 29that you abstain from things R921 sacrificed to idols and from blood R921 and from things R921 strangled and from fornication; R921 if F368 you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. Farewell."

30 So when they were sent away, they R922 went down to Antioch; and having gathered the congregation F369 together, they delivered the letter. 31 When they had read it, they rejoiced because of its encouragement. F370 32 Judas R923 and Silas, R924 also being prophets R925 themselves, encouraged F371 and strengthened the R926 brethren with a lengthy message. 33 After they had spent time there, they were sent away from the brethren in R927 peace to those who had sent R928 them out. 34 [But F372 it seemed good to Silas to remain there.] 35 But Paul R929 and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and preaching R930 with many others also, the R931 word of the Lord.

Second Missionary Journey

36 After some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us return and visit the brethren in every R932 city in which we proclaimed the R933 word of the Lord, and see how they are." 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, R934 called Mark, along with them also. 38 But Paul kept insisting that they should not take him along who had deserted R935 them in F373 Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work. 39 And there occurred such a sharp disagreement that they separated from one another, and Barnabas took Mark R936 with him and sailed away to Cyprus. R937 40 But Paul chose Silas R938 and left, being committed R939 by the brethren to the grace of the Lord. 41 And he was traveling through Syria R940 and Cilicia, R941 strengthening the churches.
