Jesus, the Example

1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay R554 aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run R555 with endurance R556 the race that is set before us, 2 fixing F140 our eyes on Jesus, the author R557 F141 and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured R558 the cross, despising R559 the shame, and has sat R560 down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 For consider R561 Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and R562 F142 lose heart.

A Father's Discipline

4 You R563 have not yet resisted to R564 F143 the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; 5 and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons, "MY R565 SON, DO NOT REGARD LIGHTLY THE DISCIPLINE OF THE LORD, NOR FAINT R566 WHEN YOU ARE REPROVED BY HIM;

7 It is for discipline that you endure; God R569 deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? 8 But if you are without discipline, of R570 which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we had earthly F144 fathers to discipline us, and we respected R571 them; shall we not much rather be subject to the R572 Father of spirits, F145 and live? R573 10 For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so R574 that we may share His holiness. 11 All discipline for R575 the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful R576 fruit of righteousness.

12 Therefore, strengthen R577 F146 the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, 13 and make R578 straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be R579 healed.

14 Pursue R580 peace with all men, and the sanctification R581 without which no one will see R582 the Lord. 15 See to it that no one comes R583 short of the grace of God; that no root R584 of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled; R585 16 that there be no immoral R586 or godless R587 person like Esau, who R588 sold his own birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that even afterwards, when R589 he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought for it with tears.

Contrast of Sinai and Zion

18 For R590 you have not come to a R591 mountain that can be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind, 19 and to the blast R592 of a trumpet and the sound R593 of words which sound was such that those who heard begged R594 that no further word be spoken to them. 20 For they could not bear the command, "IF R595 EVEN A BEAST TOUCHES THE MOUNTAIN, IT WILL BE STONED." 21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, "I R596 AM FULL OF FEAR and trembling." 22 But you R597 have come to Mount Zion and to the R598 city of the R599 living God, the R600 heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads R601 of angels, F147 23 to the general assembly and church R602 of the firstborn who are R603 enrolled in heaven, and to God, the R604 Judge of all, and to the spirits R605 of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator R606 of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled R607 blood, which speaks better than the R608 blood of Abel.

The Unshaken Kingdom

25 See R609 to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. R610 For if R611 those did not escape when they refused R612 him who warned R613 them on earth, much F148 less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns R613 from heaven. 26 And His R614 voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "YET R615 ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN." 27 This expression, "Yet once more," denotes the R616 removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. 28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom R617 which cannot be shaken, let us show F149 gratitude, by which we may offer R618 to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; 29 for our R619 God is a consuming fire.
