The Peril of Falling Away

1 Therefore leaving R187 the R188 elementary F42 teaching about the Christ, F43 let us press on to maturity, R189 F44 not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead R190 works and of faith toward God, 2 of instruction R191 about washings and laying R192 on of hands, and the resurrection R193 of the dead and eternal R193 judgment. 3 And this we will do, if R194 God permits. 4 For in the case of those who have once been enlightened R195 and have tasted of the R196 heavenly gift and have been made partakers R197 of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have R198 tasted the good word R199 of God and the powers of the R200 age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, it is impossible R201 to renew them again to repentance, since R202 F45 they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame. 7 For ground that drinks the rain which often falls F46 on it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for R203 whose sake it is also tilled, receives a blessing from God; 8 but if it yields thorns and thistles, it is worthless and close R204 to F47 being cursed, and it F48 ends up being burned.

Better Things for You

9 But, beloved, R205 we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany F49 salvation, though we are speaking in this way. 10 For God R206 is not unjust so as to forget your R207 work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered R208 and in still ministering to the saints. F50 11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so F51 as to realize the full R209 assurance of hope R210 until the end, 12 so that you will not be sluggish, but imitators R211 of those who through faith R212 and patience inherit R213 the promises.

13 For when R214 God made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore R215 by Himself, 14 saying, "I R216 WILL SURELY BLESS YOU AND I WILL SURELY MULTIPLY YOU." 15 And so, having R217 patiently waited, he obtained the promise. 16 For R218 men swear by one F52 greater than themselves, and with them an R219 oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. 17 In F53 the same way God, desiring even more to show to the R220 heirs of the promise the R221 unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed F54 with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things in which it R222 is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken F55 refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the R223 hope set before us. 19 This F56 hope R224 we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters R225 within F57 the veil, 20 where R226 Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high R227 priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
