Lament for Babylon

1 "Come R1904 down and sit in the dust,

O virgin R1905 daughter R1906 of Babylon;

Sit on the ground without a throne,

O daughter of the Chaldeans!

For you shall no longer be called tender R1907 and delicate.

2 "Take the millstones R1908 and grind R1909 meal.

Remove your veil, R1910 strip R1911 off the skirt,

Uncover the leg, cross the rivers.

3 "Your nakedness R1912 will be uncovered,

Your shame also will be exposed;

I will take R1913 vengeance and will not spare F685 a man."

4 Our Redeemer, R1914 the LORD of hosts is His name,

The Holy One of Israel.

5 "Sit R1915 silently, and go into darkness, R1916

O daughter of the Chaldeans,

For you will no longer be called

The queen R1917 of kingdoms. R1918

6 "I was angry with My people,

I profaned My heritage

And gave them into your hand.

You did not show mercy to them,

On the aged R1919 you made your yoke very heavy.

7 "Yet you said, `I will be a queen R1920 forever.'

These things you did not consider R1921

Nor remember the outcome R1922 of them. F686

8 "Now, then, hear this, you sensual R1923 one,

Who dwells R1924 securely,

Who says in your F687 heart,

`I R1925 am, and there is no one besides me.

I will not R1926 sit as a widow,

Nor know loss of children.'

9 "But these two R1927 things will come on you suddenly R1928 in one day:

Loss of children and widowhood.

They will come on you in full measure

In spite of your many sorceries, R1929

In spite of the great power of your spells.

10 "You felt secure R1930 in your wickedness and said,

`No R1931 one sees me,'

Your wisdom R1932 and your knowledge, they F688 have deluded you;

For you have said in your heart,

`I R1933 am, and there is no one besides me.'

11 "But evil R1934 will come on you

Which you will not know how to charm away;

And disaster will fall on you

For which you cannot atone;

And destruction R1935 about which you do not know

Will come on you suddenly. R1936

12 "Stand fast now in your spells R1937

And in your many sorceries

With which you have labored from your youth;

Perhaps you will be able to profit,

Perhaps you may cause trembling.

13 "You are wearied R1938 with your many counsels;

Let now the astrologers, R1939

Those who prophesy by the stars,

Those who predict by the new moons,

Stand up and save R1940 you from what will come upon you.

14 "Behold, they have become like R1941 stubble,

Fire R1942 burns them;

They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame;

There will be no R1943 coal to warm by

Nor a fire to sit before!

15 "So have those become to you with whom you have labored,

Who have trafficked R1944 with you from your youth;

Each has wandered in his own way; F689

There is none R1945 to save you.
