Israel Exhorted

1 "Listen R2098 to me, you who pursue R2099 righteousness,

Who seek the LORD:

Look to the rock R2100 from which you were hewn

And to the quarry F715 from which you were dug.

2 "Look to Abraham R2101 your father

And to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain;

When he was R2102 but one I called him,

Then I blessed him and multiplied him."

3 Indeed, the R2103 LORD will comfort Zion;

He will comfort all her waste R2104 places.

And her wilderness R2105 He will make like Eden, R2106

And her desert like the garden R2107 of the LORD;

Joy R2108 and gladness will be found in her,

Thanksgiving and sound of a melody.

4 "Pay R2109 attention to Me, O My people,

And give ear to Me, O My nation; F716

For a law R2110 will go forth from Me,

And I will set F717 My justice R2111 for a light R2112 of the peoples.

5 "My righteousness R2113 is near, My salvation has gone forth,

And My arms R2114 will judge the peoples;

The coastlands R2115 will wait for Me,

And for My arm R2116 they will wait expectantly.

6 "Lift R2117 up your eyes to the sky,

Then look to the earth beneath;

For the sky R2118 will vanish like smoke,

And the earth R2118 will wear out like a garment

And its inhabitants will die in F718 like manner;

But My salvation R2119 will be forever,

And My righteousness will not wane. F719

7 "Listen R2120 to Me, you who know righteousness,

A people in whose heart R2121 is My law;

Do not fear the reproach R2122 of man,

Nor be dismayed at their revilings.

8 "For the moth R2123 will eat them like a garment,

And the grub R2124 will eat them like wool.

But My righteousness R2125 will be forever,

And My salvation to all generations."

9 Awake, R2126 awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD;

Awake as in the days R2127 of old, the generations of long ago.

Was R2128 it not You who cut Rahab in pieces,

Who pierced the dragon? R2129

10 Was it not You who dried R2130 up the sea,

The waters of the great deep;

Who made the depths of the sea a pathway

For the redeemed R2131 to cross over?

11 So the ransomed R2132 of the LORD will return

And come with joyful shouting to Zion,

And everlasting R2133 joy will be on their heads.

They will obtain gladness and joy,

And sorrow R2134 and sighing will flee away.

12 "I, even I, am He who comforts R2135 you.

Who are you that you are afraid of man R2136 who dies

And of the son of man who is made like R2137 grass,

13 That you have forgotten R2138 the LORD your Maker,

Who stretched R2139 out the heavens

And laid the foundations of the earth,

That you fear R2140 continually all day long because of the fury of the oppressor,

As he makes ready to destroy?

But where is the fury of the oppressor? R2141

14 "The exile R2142 F720 will soon be set free, and will not die in the dungeon, nor R2143 will his bread be lacking. 15 "For I am the LORD your God, who stirs R2144 up the sea and its waves roar (the LORD of hosts is His name). 16 "I have put R2145 My words in your mouth and have covered R2146 you with the shadow of My hand, to establish R2147 F721 the heavens, to found the earth, and to say to Zion, `You are My people.' "

17 Rouse R2148 yourself! Rouse yourself! Arise, O Jerusalem,

You who have drunk R2149 from the LORD'S hand the cup of His anger;

The chalice F722 of reeling you have drained F723 to the dregs.

18 There is none R2150 to guide her among all the sons she has borne,

Nor is there one to take her by the hand among all the sons she has reared.

19 These two things have befallen you;

Who will mourn for you?

The devastation R2151 and destruction, famine and sword;

How shall I comfort you?

20 Your sons have fainted,

They lie R2152 helpless at the head of every street,

Like an antelope R2153 in a net,

Full of the wrath of the LORD,

The rebuke R2154 of your God.

21 Therefore, please hear this, you afflicted, R2155

Who are drunk, R2156 but not with wine:

22 Thus says your Lord, the LORD, even your God

Who contends R2157 for His people,

"Behold, I have taken out of your hand the cup R2158 of reeling,

The chalice F724 of My anger;

You will never drink it again.

23 "I will put R2159 it into the hand of your tormentors,

Who have said to you, F725 `Lie R2160 down that we may walk over you.'

You have even made your back like the ground

And like the street for those who walk over it."
