1 Paul, R1 a R2 prisoner of Christ R3 Jesus, and Timothy R4 our F1 brother,

To Philemon our beloved brother and fellow R5 worker, 2 and to Apphia our R6 F2 sister, and to Archippus R7 our fellow R8 soldier, and to the R9 church in your house: 3 Grace R10 to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philemon's Love and Faith

4 I R11 thank my God always, making mention of you in my prayers, 5 because I hear R12 of your love and of the faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints; F3 6 and I pray that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through F4 the knowledge R13 of every good thing which is in you for F5 Christ's sake. 7 For I have come to have much joy R14 and comfort in your love, because the hearts F6 of the saints F7 have been refreshed R15 through you, brother.

8 Therefore, though R16 I have enough F8 confidence in Christ to order you to do what is proper, R17 9 yet for love's sake I rather appeal R18 to you --since I am such a person as Paul, the F9 aged, R19 and now also a R20 prisoner of Christ R21 Jesus--

Plea for Onesimus, a Free Man

10 I appeal R22 to you for my child R23 Onesimus, R24 F10 whom I have begotten in my imprisonment, F11 11 who formerly was useless to you, but now is useful both to you and to me. 12 I have sent him back to you in person, that is, sending my very heart, 13 whom I wished to keep with me, so that on your behalf he might minister to me in my imprisonment R25 F12 for the gospel; 14 but without your consent I did not want to do anything, so that your goodness would not R26 be, in effect, by compulsion but of your own free will. 15 For perhaps he R27 was for this reason separated from you for a while, that you would have him back forever, 16 no R28 longer as a slave, but more than a slave, a R29 beloved brother, especially to me, but how much more to you, both in R30 the flesh and in the Lord.

17 If then you regard me a partner, R31 accept him as you would me. 18 But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge that to my account; 19 I, R32 Paul, am writing this with my own hand, I will repay it (not R33 to mention F13 to you that you owe to me even your own self as well). 20 Yes, brother, let me benefit from you in the Lord; refresh R34 my heart in Christ.

21 Having R35 confidence in your obedience, I write to you, since I know that you will do even more than what I say.

22 At the same time also prepare me a lodging, R36 for I R37 hope that through your R38 prayers I R39 will be given to you.

23 Epaphras, R40 my fellow R41 prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, 24 as do Mark, R42 Aristarchus, R43 Demas, R44 Luke, R44 my fellow R45 workers.

25 The R46 grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with R47 your spirit. F14
