The Commendation of Wisdom

1 Does not wisdom R289 call,

And understanding lift F87 up her voice?

2 On top of the R290 heights beside the way,

Where the paths meet, she takes her stand;

3 Beside the gates, R291 at the opening to the city,

At the entrance of the doors, she cries out:

4 "To you, O men, I call,

And my voice is to the sons of men.

5 "O naive R292 F88 ones, understand prudence;

And, O fools, R293 understand wisdom. F89

6 "Listen, for I will speak noble R294 things;

And the opening of my lips will reveal right R295 things.

7 "For my mouth R296 will utter truth;

And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

8 "All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness;

There is nothing crooked R297 or perverted in them.

9 "They are all straightforward R298 to him who understands,

And right to those who find R299 knowledge.

10 "Take my instruction R300 and not silver,

And knowledge rather than choicest gold.

11 "For wisdom is better R301 than jewels; F90

And all R302 desirable things cannot compare with her.

12 "I, wisdom, dwell R303 with prudence,

And I find knowledge R304 and discretion.

13 "The fear R305 of the LORD is to hate evil;

Pride R306 and arrogance and the R307 evil way

And the perverted R308 mouth, I hate.

14 "Counsel R309 is mine and sound R310 wisdom;

I am understanding, power R311 is mine.

15 "By me kings R312 reign,

And rulers decree justice.

16 "By me princes rule, and nobles,

All who judge rightly.

17 "I love R313 those who love me;

And those R314 who diligently seek me will find me.

18 "Riches R315 and honor are with me,

Enduring wealth R316 and righteousness.

19 "My fruit is better R317 than gold, even pure gold,

And my yield better than choicest R318 silver.

20 "I walk in the way of righteousness,

In the midst of the paths of justice,

21 To endow those who love me with wealth,

That I may fill R319 their treasuries.

22 "The LORD possessed me at R320 the beginning of His way,

Before His works of F91 old.

23 "From everlasting I was established, R321 F92

From the beginning, from R322 the earliest times of the earth.

24 "When there were no depths R323 I was brought F93 forth,

When there were no springs abounding with water.

25 "Before R324 the mountains were settled,

Before the hills I was brought F94 forth;

26 While He had not yet made the earth and the fields, F95

Nor the first dust of the world.

27 "When He established R325 the heavens, I was there,

When He R326 inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,

28 When He made firm the skies above,

When the springs of the deep became fixed, F96

29 When He R327 set for the sea its boundary

So that the water would not transgress His command, F97

When He marked out the R328 foundations of the earth;

30 Then I R329 was beside Him, as a master workman;

And I was daily His delight,

Rejoicing F98 always before Him,

31 Rejoicing F99 in the world, His earth,

And having my R330 delight in the sons of men.

32 "Now therefore, O sons, listen R331 to me,

For blessed R332 are they who keep my ways.

33 "Heed R333 instruction and be wise,

And do not neglect it.

34 "Blessed R334 is the man who listens to me,

Watching daily at my gates,

Waiting at my doorposts.

35 "For he R335 who finds me finds life

And obtains R336 favor from the LORD.

36 "But he who sins F100 against me injures R337 himself;

All those who hate R338 me love R339 death."
