The Vanity of Life.

For the choir director, for Jeduthun. F344 A Psalm of David.

1 I said, "I will guard R1188 my ways

That I may R1189 not sin with my tongue;

I will guard my R1190 mouth as with a muzzle

While the wicked are in my presence."

2 I was mute R1191 and F345 silent,

I refrained F346 even from good,

And my sorrow F347 grew worse.

3 My heart R1192 was hot within me,

While I was musing the fire burned;

Then I spoke with my tongue:

4 "LORD, make me to know my R1193 end

And what is the extent of my days;

Let me know how transient R1194 I am.

5 "Behold, You have made my R1195 days as handbreadths,

And my lifetime R1196 as nothing in Your sight;

Surely every man at F348 his best is a F349 mere breath. R1197 Selah. F350

6 "Surely every man walks R1198 about as a F351 phantom;

Surely they make an uproar R1199 for nothing;

He amasses R1200 riches and does not know who will gather them.

7 "And now, Lord, for what do I wait?

My hope R1201 is in You.

8 "Deliver R1202 me from all my transgressions;

Make me not the reproach R1203 of the foolish.

9 "I have become mute, R1204 I do not open my mouth,

Because it is You R1205 who have done it.

10 "Remove R1206 Your plague from me;

Because of the R1207 opposition of Your hand I am perishing. F352

11 "With reproofs R1208 You chasten a man for iniquity;

You consume R1209 as a moth what is precious to him;

Surely every R1210 man is a mere breath. Selah.

12 "Hear R1211 my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry;

Do not be silent at R1212 my tears;

For I am a R1213 stranger with You,

A sojourner R1214 like all my fathers.

13 "Turn R1215 Your gaze away from me, that I may smile F353 again

Before I depart and am no more."
