NEGINAH, NEGINOTH

(neh gee' nuh, nehg' ih nahth) Neginoth, the plural form of Neginah, is used as a technical term in the superscriptions of several psalms (Psalms 4:1, Psalms 6:1, Psalms 54-55, Psalms 61:1, Psalms 67:1, Psalms 76:1) and as the subscription of Habakkuk 3:19. The term is generally understood to specify the instrumentation needed for performance, “with stringed instruments” (compare Isaiah 38:20; Lamentations 5:14). Other references suggest that neginah designates a taunt song (Job 30:9; Psalms 69:12; Lamentations 3:14).
